The mission of the Valor Home Committee (VHC) is to support veterans and their dependents in and around Summit County, Ohio in their efforts to achieve lasting self- sufficiency. Critical to this mission is the ability for individual veterans to find and retain permanent housing. They wish to establish and maintain temporary transitional housing facilities for veterans who are on a path to self-sufficiency. In addition, VHC will help to support comprehensive individual case management and to facilitate access to community and government resources, as veterans become productive, independent and content members of our community. VHC wants to serve and respect the individual needs of veterans, so that they may continue to contribute to the community and country, which are grateful for their service.
Freedom House is a sister program of Family and Community Services, Inc. (F&CS) located in Portage County in the city of Kent, OH. F&CS has established this facility and program of services through a grant from the U.S Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). VHC is a group of Summit County citizens that has formed an Executive Committee to support the creation and operation of a Summit County facility similar to Freedom House. The Executive Committee has chosen the name Valor Home for the Summit County facility and VHC has been re-named from the former Summit County Community Involvement for Veterans Committee (SCCIVC).
The application process was initiated by F&CS in behalf of VHC to the VA Homeless Provider’s Grant and PerDiem Program. In a letter dated May 5, 2010, the Valor Home project was conditionally granted funding by the VA. The new grant will fund 65% the construction costs of the 30-bed Summit County facility, and pay a per-diem amount to help offset the operational costs. VHC will work to raise the additional 35% of construction costs through sponsorships, donations, volunteer hours and services in kind. We also have contacted area veteran’s organizations to help with the construction and operational costs.
The VHC has adopted by-laws and will remain affiliated with F&CS. Once the Valor Home is constructed and open, the VHC Executive Committee will continue to be involved with operations. VHC intends to support the income and expenses of the facility as well as the progress of our veterans. Future expansion opportunities and grant programs will be pursued as opportunities arise. Below are a few pictures of what the building will look like.
